As A Man Thinketh By James Allen Book Review
As A Man Thinketh By James Allen is a self-help book that was originally published in 1903.
As the title might allude to, it’s not exactly politically correct for today’s day in age, but the messages are clear.
When I read it, I just assumed when he uses the word ‘man’, that ‘mankind’ is inferred. I don’t take offense to political incorrectness from over a century ago.
I have read this book many, many times. It is not very long, just 90 pages. And the copy that I have has a huge font, which I love because it makes for an easier read with my old eyes.
Why I have read this book so many times is because I tend to do really well with my goals for a short amount of time, fall off the wagon, and eventually give it another go. When I want to re-motivate myself, I usually reach for this book to help set my mind up for success.
Summary
As A Man Thinketh explains how our thoughts affect our actions. In essence, if we have negative thoughts and self-talk, our actions will be negative and move us further away from our goals. On the other hand, if we have positive self-talk followed by positive actions, we move ourselves toward our goals.
We are what we think.
Not only does James Allen emphasize that thinking positively is important, but you must take action to see results.
“Not what he wishes and prays for does a man get, but what he justly earns. His wishes and prayers are only gratified and answered when they harmonize with his thoughts and actions.”
Personal Reflection
I find that I have a tendency to get down on myself on a regular basis when things don’t go my way or when I don’t see any results fast enough from my actions. Both of which happen too often.
Having a copy of As A Man Thinketh at home to read through and remind myself that positive thoughts and action will lead to success has gotten me back in the game on too many occasions to count.
Success doesn’t happen overnight, and the reminder to stay positive and stay on track through the tough times is invaluable.
Is As A Man Thinketh Right For You?
As I noted previously, this book is not politically correct. If you can’t get over the fact that he and man are used throughout, then you probably will not like this book.
However, if you’re like me and find it kinda funny, you will get a lot out of this book and refer to it over and over again.
I would even recommend reading it on a regular basis, not just when you’re down in the dumps. I think the messaging is important and we need reminders just as much when times are good as when times are not so good.
If you have read this book, please leave your thoughts in the comments. It would be great to hear about your experience.
